Ferring Village To the west of Goring lies Ferring, a residential area of attractive bungalows, with a seafront walk as far as Littlehampton. To walk on beyond that you need to take the ferry across the Arun. It is about half a mile from here to The Bluebird Cafe |
Goring Gap The mown grass at the seafront is open, favoured by fishermen who have their gear on the front, by the windsurfers, and by the horseriders. Ferring is separated from Goring by the Goring Gap, an area under cultivation back as far as the trees of Ilex Avenue, and then on from the railway line back to the downs. The dotted line on the map shows the actual boundary with Ferring. More on the Goring Gap More on the Ilex Avenue |
The Plantation A wide avenue of trees from the sea back to Ilex Avenue, with a shady path. Excellent during inclement weather. |
Tamarisk Bushes The centre area of the seafront with tamarisk bushes along the sea wall. This is a wide stretch of mown grass and is a sheltered area for ball games, picnics and barbecues. |
Sea Lane Cafe Sea Lane Cafe is at the end of Sea Lane of course. Just west of the cafe are Fred and Frank the fishermen, selling their catch. |
Beach Huts Not only a line of beach huts along Marine Crescent, but also a wide area of mown grass used on windy days for kite flying and para-karting; three wheel buggies towed at speed by man-lifting kites.
WBC Beach Office on Worthing seafront near the Lido (01903-238977) have a beach patrol, and licence the beach huts for a small fee each year. |
Jetski Ramp Not much liked by the residents but great fun. The earlier one-man, standup jetskis are gradually being overtaken by two or three passenger craft, but the speed and the noise is the same. They are required to manoeuvre in a narrow access lane to the half-mile marker, and then to keep outside the yellow buoys. The Worthing beach rescue boat enforces this. Just near the ramp are Peter, Paul and David selling fish. Efforts are made to have dogs on leads and off the beach, between here and the yacht club, with not a lot of success. |
Yacht Club Very active on racing days, and with catamarans and windsurfers at all stages of the tide and whatever the wind. Picture Baloos Bar and Restaurant is here. |
West Worthing From here on it is all formal promenade, with parking on the road. Dolphin Court is the large building blocking the skyline, marking the start of the flats and hotels of Worthing seaside resort. Dolphin Court was built as a hotel but is now mansion flats. |
